About howsaudio.

howsaudio - Howard Nock - Broadcast TV Sound Supervisor.

Well hello.

I am a BAFTA nominated freelance broadcast sound supervisor with over 30 years industry experience and credits on many network television productions.

Over this time I have worked on a wide range of television genres including live light entertainment shows and global sporting events. Equally at home in a studio control room, OB truck or audio post suite, as long as a cup of tea isn't too far away.

Although based in Manchester I am happy to travel and have worked in the Uk, South America, Europe and Russia.

Please have a look around the website for more detailed information or scroll down to see the most up to date work news which is just a blog list giving basic details.

A full list of programmes can be found in the programme credits tab on this website.

Thanks for looking.

HOWARDS WORK NEWS

Away from the comforts of the indoor TV studio I found myself on the outskirts of Liverpool on sound mixing duties for BBC Sport and FA Cup 4th round duties.

A Timeline OB for the Everton v Luton fixture.

More Britain Get Singing please.

A lovely show to be involved with this one. Due to be broadcast on Christmas Eve evening on ITV it features around 34 different vocal performers battling it out in 5 groups in front of the judges Will I Am, Alesha Dixon, Adam Lambert and Jonathon Ross.

Game On was a new programme under the Children in Need umbrella.

2 hours live and transmitted from Confetti Studios in Nottingham.

A hybrid gallery and de-rig operation, it was a mixture of interviews, VTs and live video gaming. It was also the first time I had ever used a Digico as my broadcast desk which went surprisingly well.

More football for BBC Sport, including Match of the Day and Football Focus.

All transmitted in 5.1 surround and with a brand new Augmented Reality set for the new season.

Happy to report the delay time to compensate for the AR seems to be getting lower and lower each season!

Lots more Morning Live shows under my belt.

Located at the top of the ABC building in Manchester and owned by Versa Studios, this is one of the nicest studios and galleries you could ever wish to work inside.

I realise I am very lucky to be involved in this long running popular series.

Along with Marc Riley and Rob Hughes I have been recording and producing a new music podcast for the world to enjoy. Each episode takes a look through an edition of a well loved music newspaper from the 60's, 70's and 80's. Wild stories and hilarity ensue.

Catch up now on patreon.

The Soap Awards 2023 came to the Lowry Theatre this year.

I have been supervised this for around 15 years now and it is a well oiled machine with a great crew.

Using an EMG OB unit we recorded as for live for a 2 and a half hour programme that was transmitted a few days later.

King Charles III invited me down to be sound supervisor on his Coronation concert at his house in Windsor.

As garden parties go this was a bit special. Live on BBC1 and featuring Take That, Lionel Richie plus many others including a speech from the new Prince of Wales, I was in the mixing in the concert truck with the fabulous director Julia Knowles.

Been doing a bit of Football Focus recently. On air every Saturday lunchtime live on BBC1 and has a lively mix of football chat, outside source content and VTs.

Filmed at Dock 10 Salford it's a long running programme that I've been involved with for 10 years now.

BBC Morning Live is an ongoing and very enjoyable job to supervise, keeping my live lifestyle mixing skills ticking over.

Following on from BBC Breakfast it is on air from 0915 to 1000 everyday from Monday to Friday and covers a huge range of topics but every show is filled with guests and Zoom calls keeping everyone on their toes.

A bit of post production on the go. Currently track laying for the latest series of Justins House for Cbeebies.

I was involved with this show years ago in studio and am happy to be invited into the house again.

Back down to Elstree Film and TV studios for a month working on the rest of the The Voice UK Adult and kids series. Both series end with a final show which isn't live anymore but the audio production is still of the highest order.

David Tench leads the Voice band which takes the idea of a house band to another level.

I am very fortunate to work on Match of the Day.

It's a show with great production values, always pushing the technical capabilities, and is universally recognised and respected.

I didn't think could hold Gary Lineker in higher regard. I was wrong.

Who Wants To Be a Millionaire..... well I certainly do.

Another lovely series in the can under the steer of Jeremy Clarkson. It is one of the most pleasurable programmes to be involved with and long may that continue.

Filmed at Dock 10 and audio kit supplied by Terry Tew.

A great start to 2023 with a corporate gig for The Circle Agency and their clients Coca-Cola.

It's becoming a yearly New Year party for Coca-Cola Uk employees and this year features the artists HRVY and Ella Henderson. Each doing a set with a live band in front of a studio audience, and web streamed for those that can't attend.

BBC1s Morning Live and Blue Peter Christmas shows bring 2022 to an end for me.

Each one packed with nativity and Christmas sing-alongs.

My thanks to FAC365 for supplying extra kit and crew to cover every production request.

A traditional end to the year. The Voice UK Adult blind auditions are always in studio on the run up to Christmas and this year is no different.

80 odd snapshots on the Calrec, top crew, and a new game for the sound controlroom (for those quick tea breaks). Its called Klask. I urge everyone to buy one.

Bit more info on Britain Get Singing for ITV. 5 choirs made up of well known ITV programme celebrities, battle it out to become the Christmas winner.

Hosted by Roman Kemp its a feel good singing show that touches on mental health issues.

Top sound floor team involved and audio kit brought in by Terry Tew.

Just about to start the month long journey of bringing the Qatar World Cup to your screens for BBC Sport. From rigging to the live broadcast it usually throws up a few challenges along the way but it's something I feel proud to be involved with and is my 3rd World Cup supervising for the BBC.

Available in UHD and HD with 5.1 surround sound.

More Question of Sport, more Morning Live, and a Christmas Special for ITV. Not sure when it hits the airwaves but the Christmas show was called Britain Get Singing and features singing groups from Coronation Street, Emmerdale, Loose Women, Love Island and the Chase. Not wanting to give it away but it is a departure from the usual singing shows we are used to. More info here...

Another session for BBC Sport over the summer working on the 2022 Commonwealth Games. Not based amongst the action in Birmingham but in Salford BBC Quay House and working on the best bit in my humble view............. the BBC 3 output.

I found out that this programme actually started in the year of my birth. 1970.

Maybe this is why I hold it in high regard, so it goes without saying that I say yes to working on another series.

A lovely week and a half working on series 2 of Sitting on a Fortune.

Full kudos to the presenter Gary Lineker for guiding all of the contestants through this rollercoaster of a quiz show for ITV1.

And off the back of the Jubilee concert another couple of weeks mixing Morning Live for BBC 1.

An early start but it's the kind of show that keeps you on your toes and forces you to wake up very quickly.

The BBCs Platinum Party At The Palace has to be one of the most memorable programmes I have been a part of. Headed up by Kev Duff, I was mixing in the NEP  concert truck with Julia Knowles directing. A huge collective team effort.

Back down to Windsor for a week for ITV 1.

The Queens Platinum Jubilee Celebration programme presented by Philip Schofield and Julie Etchingham was a live outdoor concert featuring re-enactments, music performances and military showmanship.

A reboot of an old show that used to be presented by Ant and Dec.

Friends Like These came in for a one off pilot presented by Vernon kay and Alison Hammond.

Loads of energy!

Another series of The Voice Adults and Kids UK completed.

I can't quite believe we have been on this show for the last 10 years now and it doesn't show any sign of stopping.

2022 starts with what is turning out to be an annual corporate event for Coca Cola Europe. Last year it was The Kaiser Chiefs, this year it was Gary Barlow entertaining both a studio audience and an online employee audience. 10 songs. No filler all Gary Barlow thrillers.

A first one for me, and a first one for Salford. Children in Need comes to the North!

Three hours on air with 5 presenters, live musical acts including Ed Sheeran, drumkits, Pudsey bear, a Mastermind sketch plus a rowdy Salford audience.

Whats not to like.

The finale to a terrific series of programmes transmitting the Gran Turismo player championships for Golden Egg and Sony. The studio element was recorded in a virtual reality studio at Dock 10 studios and the race coverage presented by Denham technology. Makes you want to buy a steering wheel and a Playstation!

A warm welcome back to a new look Question of Sport.

New presenter, new captains but still filmed at Dock 10 with some familiar production faces.

Its still very enjoyable to mix and work on.

And we go straight from the Euros to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

2 weeks of rigging and 2 weeks on air, broadcasting live on BBC1 from midnight to 6am every day. It is great being involved in this event and I lost count how many hours of mixing I clocked up on this one.

Another 5.1 surround broadcast from BBC Sport Salford.

After a delay of a year, the Euro 2020 Football tournament is back on our television sets in 2021.

The BBC VR presentation studio is based in HQ7 in Salford and the matches and other incoming lines feed into the studio and the programme transmitted in 5.1 surround.

After a very long gap, Rolling in it rolls back into the studio for a brand new series.

Sadly still without a live audience, Stephen Mulhern brings an otherwise dead studio to life augmented by an applause soundtrack thanks to the brilliant Heather Wynn on grams.

A brand new quiz show for Channel 4 with a quirky twist.

Quizness is hosted by the very professional Tom Allen. The series was filmed in HQ2 at Dock 10 and comes to your screens very soon.

A new series for me, it's Lingo.

Its a daytime quiz format with simple rules but is massively addictive to play along with.

Another series of The Voice UK and live final done and dusted.

This is the 9th series I have worked on and thoroughly enjoy it too.

Nice to see this shortlisted for an award.

The remote broadcast of the FA Cup Final we did this year 2020.

It was a technical challenge but a great end result.

http://broadcasttechawards.co.uk/shortlist-2020/

Bit of background to the recording of Millionaire in these Covid times. Clair Carney explains all.

https://www.broadcastnow.co.uk/tech/making-a-millionaire-during-lockdown/5153685.article

Its Friday, its 5 to 5, its Crackerjack!!

Series 2 of this little beauty is now underway. No audience but let's not let that stop the juggernaught that is this show. Great to mix and thoroughly enjoy the live feel which hopefully makes it through to your tv speakers at home.

More Question of Sports in the bag, also a Football Focus for BBC Sport and not forgetting the childrens classic Blue Peter for CBBC.

Voice Kids 2020. We filmed this in August, many months after shooting the series.

Another casualty of the Covid No Audience edict but again it worked really well especially with Kev Duffs post production magic.

Well, wasn't sure if this was going to work without an audience but what do I know. A well loved format and a programme and production team I have been part of for years. Long may it continue!!!!

Another remote broadcast mixed successfully. This time the FA Cup final for BBC Sport. Production gallery in Salford, studio at Wembley.

Here is a bit more info about how we got on.

https://www.prolificnorth.co.uk/news/coronavirus/2020/08/bbc-sport-delivers-savings-remote-gallery-fa-cup-final

Wow. Just when I thought TV production was drying up, booooommmm.

Who Wants to be a Millionaire comes along and even without an audience this show just works. Shows how strong the format is.

And a Millionaire made as well!!!!

So out of the blue comes BBC Bitesize. Very happy to be involved with the recording of this series of programmes for the UKs school children over these extraordinary times. Full precautions are in place obviously.

Two more pilots in the can. One was a standard quiz show set up but without an audience due to the recent Coronavirus outbreak, the other was a virtual reality quiz show.

Both were directed by Ollie Bartlett so a very safe pair of hands.

A new show for me. Got What it Takes is a singing show for CBBC and culminates in a Grand Final where the finalists get to perform in front of a studio audience, some celebrity judges and accompanied by a live band.

It is a fast paced, schedule crammed programme with a very tight turn around before it transmits. Luckily I have an amazing sound team who pulled out all of the stops to deliver a flawless show.

Still at Elstree but this time for the adults version of The Voice Knockouts.

I moved out of the Zen Broadcast mobile and into the George Lucas control room, hopping from an SSL T series to a Studer Vista X.

Back to Elstree in February to mix the next round of The Voice Kids Knockouts.

Mixed and recorded in the excellent Zen Broadcast mobile on an SSL T series console.

Possibly the best round of kids vocals and songs we have ever had so far.

More days working on Blue Peter for CBBC, and Match of The day and Football Focus. All broadcast live from Dock 10's AR studio HQ7.

Just completed a new pilot for Silver Star at Dock 10 studios.

Richard Van Riet directing, Lee Mack presenting and one hundred contestants made it an entertaining few days.

Fingers crossed for a series in the autumn.

An interesting few days and a collaboration between BBC Sport, Dock 10 and Arena OBs to deliver the FA Cup tie between Man City and Fulham using Calrecs RP1 remote box and Nimbra connectivity to link up a studio presentation gallery in Dock 10 to the Match truck and presentation studio at the stadium.

After many Valid and Sync it Box tests, we successfully put it all together and I mixed the 5.1 transmission output for the show.

So January is dominated with prep work for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics.

A mock up of the BBC Sport AR set was built at the Manchester Studios (Old Granada) to test the technology before it gets shipped out to Tokyo.

Not giving anything away but I think it will be a talking point once the public see it all on air.

Last job before Christmas, The Voice Kids Series 4......

The blind (turns chair bit) rounds were filmed at Dock 10 again in HQ1.

A lovely job to do with Andy Deacon on grams / ProTools and Tom Bell comms engineer, both in the control room, plus a fab floor sound crew.

See you all in the New Year....

Another job lot of Millionaire done including some Celebrity shows for Christmas.

Like him or loathe him, Jeremy Clarkson has put some life back into the format and hopefully this means it will be on our screens periodically for years to come.

A joy to mix, its one of those programmes that you can genuinely play along with while working on it....

Another series of Jane and Friends done and dusted.

A live band, old school guests and some proper Northern banter with Jane McDonald.

Highlights included Tony Christie, Hue and Cry and the one and only Chesney Hawkes.

Its Friday, its 6 O'clock, and its Crackerjack!..

Oh yes, something I remember watching as a nipper and now working on as an old fart, Crackerjack is back, steered into the 21st Century by the highly undervalued Sam and Mark. Series 1 in the can, with series 2 to come in April.

Filmed in the old Salford Uni building, Channel 4s The Circle is the next big reality thing to hit our screens. Visions NEP have dealt with the technical fit out, I mixed one of the live shows on Friday night hosted by Emma Willis.

Another 15 A Question of Sports in the can. Mixed in HQ2 at Dock 10 on a Calrec Apollo with a top crew and production team.

Another return to the old Coronation Street studio, now part of The Manchester Studios complex, with a pilot quiz show for ITV. Featuring celebrities and a very well known sports presenter as host, all went very well and fingers crossed for many more shows being recorded back on home turf.

As previously mentioned, been busy planning and setting up the new VR studio in HQ7 Dock 10 for BBC Sport over the past number of weeks. Many challenges, and many frames of delay involved.

We successfully went to air last weekend with Football Focus, Final Score and Match of the Day so fingers crossed for a problem free season ahead.

The Voice Kids Live Final 2019. This went out live on ITV1 July 27th, and was a rollercoaster ride of a show. Lots of energy and emotion and thats just the sound team!

Filmed at Elstree George Lucas again this year, I had a great week in the company of gram op Al McCardle who fed me biscuits.

Hooray for Millionaire! Love this show. Its gram-tastic with loads of Midi cues providing the soundtrack we all know and love.. Terry Tew supplying the sound kit for the series and top crew makes this a joy to supervise.

More Question of Sport episodes in the can. Ace show, Ace production team,

and probably the programme I have been mixing the longest!

Lots of time spent re-adapting HQ7 at Dock 10 Studios for BBC Sports new venture. Surprises to come for the upcoming football season. Fingers crossed everyone!

The British Soap Awards 2019 Live came to the Lowry Theatre in Salford.

A 2 hour Live transmission for ITV broadcast from Arena OB 14, it passed without a hitch and even though we were up against the Champions League Final, I think our show had more action.

Just finished 3 pilots for various production companies, all filmed at Dock 10 Salford Studios.

2 of which were presented by John Bishop and one Rob Beckett. Fingers crossed something comes of them.

One day only on Dragons Den. Filmed in Stage One at Granada TV (old Coros St studios) where I used to spend many hours in the Rovers back when Julie Goodyear was the landlady!

Just finished an excellent new game show format for OTT productions which is a subsidiary of Syco TV. A Nigel Hall concept and with Ollie Bartlett directing it turned out to be a very entertaining week recording 6 shows.

Fingers crossed for this one as it was a lot of fun and we would all be very happy to see it return.

A new venture from Gobstopper TV for Channel 4.

"Surjury" is guaranteed to raise some eyebrows due to its controversial format involving cosmetic surgery. Filmed at Dock 10 over 7 days in HQ2 studio, it is due to return in July where they will reveal the success or failure of the surgery procedures.

A bumper lot of The Voice in the bag. Recorded at Elstree George Lucas over many weeks, The adult Battles and KOs, together with the Kids Battles and Semi Finals were safely put to tape, culminating in the live broadcast of the Adult Series 8 semis and then final.

Eurovision You Decide, a live 1 and a half hour programme for the BBC that chooses the UK entry into the Eurovision Song Contest.

6 contenders and 3 guest acts including The Fizz (Bucks Fizz) and Katrina without her Waves, made up this bumper packed show mixed once again in Dock 10's HQ2

Nice to see all the hard work in Moscow has been appreciated with a Broadcast award for Best Sport Programme.

7 amazing weeks in a Timeline truck on Red Square next to the Kremlin transmitting every match and programme output for the BBC in 5.1 HD and UHD.

A terrific couple of weeks working on Who Wants To Be A Millionaire with Jeremy Clarkson hosting. Lovely crew and team, recorded in HQ2 at Dock 10 studios over two weeks and features a lot of MIDI triggering. All of the beds and stings are played in live.

Blue Peter is celebrating its 60th year in 2018.... I have been sound supe on it sporadically for the last 7 years and it is a joy to work on and be part of the BP family. The programme Editor Ewan Vinnicombe gave me a coveted Diamond Blue Peter badge the other day. A special honour...

A one off day on BBC1s Watchdog Live programme. If you enjoy watching people get ripped off then this is your thing.. I felt very uncomfortable during the show but the feeling vanished very quickly once the invoice went in.

Series 7 of Sam and Marks Wind Up complete. Lots of gunge, music, and laughs. A show so chocca-block full of live grams, Guy Rowland runs out of Spot On buttons to shove stuff on.

Definitely a highlight of my year....

Must have been working on this show for 18 years now but it never gets dull... A Question Of Sport.

The Voice Series 8 is in again at Dock 10 studios Salford.

Live band, great crew, lovely production team.... whats not to like.

Jane and Friends picked up the RTS North West award for Best Entertainment Programme tonight... Was great to see loads of ex-Granada people at the ceremony.

100 singing judges, Rob Beckett, Geri Horner and an fab production team can only mean one thing....All Together Now Series 2.

We recorded in Dock 10 in September and transmitting early 2019 with a Celeb Special being broadcast at Christmas 2018, one to ring in the old TV Times methinks.

The Voice Kids Live Final Series 2 broadcast live to the nation from Elstree.

A lovely week down there in Borehamwood working with a top team.

49 days in Moscow.

Broadcasting all of the BBC output in 5.1 UHD and HD from Timelines UHD1 truck, situated overlooking Red Square.

Big thanks to Dave Harnett from Timeline and of course The Farms Andy Thompson.

Series 2 of Jane and Friends for Channel 5 finished. Proper old school music entertainment with a live band...... Highlights include Gilbert O'Sullivan, Odyssey, Roy Wood and Billy Ocean.

More sport action for the BBC. This time the Commonwealth Games from Australias Gold Coast...only I was in Salford again broadcasting through the night. It did look lovely out there though!

Back to Elstree for the The Voice Uk adult live shows for ITV1.

The semi-finals and final show mixed in George Lucas stage on their gigantic Studer Vista X console.

No not South Korea..... Salford was our base for transmitting the BBC output of the Winter Olympics. Working continuously through the night for two weeks.

While all the TV work is going on, I am recording and editing my first podcast job.

Featuring the excellent Marc Riley and Rob Hughes, they take us on an encyclopaedic journey through the life and times of David Bowie.

A most excellent listen and available to subscribe on Acast or iTunes.

https://itunes.apple.com/gb/podcast/the-a-to-z-of-david-bowie/id1335614487?mt=2

The Voice Kids records are underway for series 2 at Elstree Studios George Lucas stage.

I am currently mixing in the lovely Zen Broadcast Mobile which has to be seen to be believed.

Just finished what was quite possibly the most enjoyable series I have ever worked on. Coming to BBC1 Saturday nights in January, it is hosted by the fantastic Rob Beckett and is called All Together Now.

It was produced by Remarkable and hats off to them for making it such a positive experience. I won't give too much away but it did involve 100 headsets and a bunch of radio mics and technology.

Series 7 of Sam and Marks Wind Up in the can.

Always a nice couple of weeks with some genuinely great people around me. Particular thanks to Guy Rowland who does a fantastic job with the grams and keeps the supply of chocolate to the sound control room at an overwhelming rate.

New Pilot for ITV1 coming to your screens at Christmas. Guess The Star is a celeb packed show, presented by Jonathon Ross and some mystery guest stars.

New show for BBC1 Saturday night, Even Better Than The Real Thing.

Harvesting the best of the tribute acts from around the globe and having them compete in front of a studio audience and to a live band.

A Christmas special to follow.

Series 2 of The Boss for BBC1 daytime complete. Should be out in the Autumn sometime. Lovely show to work on.

Due to the schedules on Saturday night we have The Voice Kids for ITV, up against Pitch Battle on BBC1.

Double credit!

Recording Series 5 of Bafta Award winning Swashbuckle for the next few weeks.

Love this show, top cast and crew.

A brilliant pilot in the can for Remarkable TV. Don't want to give anything away but it was another technical challenge sound wise but it all worked beautifully thanks to the top sound team. That was a lot of headsets..

Fingers crossed for the series..!

So just finished a brand new series for BBC1 Saturday nights.

Pitch Battle is a choir show based on the film Pitch Perfect, and features groups of up to 25 members battling it out in song.

A challenge technically but I am proud of the sound team for overcoming every hurdle put in front of us.

Dead chuffed to be nominated in this years BAFTA craft Awards.

The category is Best Entertainment Craft Team and the programme was the The Queens 90th Birthday Celebrations. Fingers crossed.

A tremendous effort from The Voice sound team for this years live episodes, culminating in the Series 6 Live Final 2017 that was broadcast on 2nd April. I took on the pres mix with Kev Duff  mixing the music. I must remember to apologise to Tom Jones!

I almost shed a tear of joy when I heard the news that Allied London are to reopen the four studios that used to belong to Granada TV.  I spent nearly 18 years working there, being trained up from sound assistant to sound supervisor and have many memories working on some fantastic programmes in studios 2,6,8 and 12.

And so back down to LH2 in Park Royal for the live episodes of The Voice adults.

8 episodes to transmit over 5 weekends. Good luck all.

Just completed a fab new quiz show series called The Boss hosted by lovely Susan Calman. Due out in May 2017 it will take the daytime airwaves by storm.

Series 2 of The Code in the can. Not sure when it hits the screens on the BBC but it certainly put the CEDAR DNS8 through its paces.

So The Voice is now on ITV which includes a brand new Kids Series. We have been busy recording the Blinds of the Kids and the Adults version which will be a massive success methinks.

Sam and Marks Friday Wind Up Series 6 in the can and on your screens from Jan 2017. Thanks as always to the sound team.

Series 5 has just won a BAFTA for best Childrens Entertainment Programme 2016. Here is a link to see more,

http://awards.bafta.org/award/2016/childrens/entertainment

And back into Saturday night LE.

Lovely series called "Meet the Parents" completed at Studio 1 TLS recently.

Starts on ITV1 Saturday 15th October, just before the X Factor.

And now summer has just ended with 6 weeks spent in Rio mixing the Olympics coverage for BBC4. Its been a colossal team effort headed by Dave Lee who will probably need a lie down now its all over.

So the summer of BBC Sport started with 7 weeks on the Euro 2016 football tournament. Pictured here with the sound and camera team we transmitted every game for the BBC in 5.1 surround.

A fantastic three weeks supervising the Pres mix on The Voice UK Live shows 2016 at Elstrees George Lucas stage. Sadly the last series for BBC1 .

First time at TLS Studio 1. On comms duty for Ant and Decs Saturday Night Takeaway Feb 2016.

Here we go, the much anticipated new series of TFI Friday.

Trying to make sense of the chaos on and off screen was a challenge but the end product was one to be proud of. I supervised the pres mix/ programme output and Kev Duff supervised the music stage.

Cbeebies Swashbuckle wins a Bafta Kids for best childrens entertainment programme. Proud to be the sound supervisor of every series of this gem of a show.

Sam and Marks Big Friday Wind Up wins a 2015 RTS North award.

We have just finished the 2016 series and it just keeps getting better. A real treat mixing this programme. Been part of the team since series 2.

Currently filming the latest series of The Voice for the BBC at MediacityUK.

A pleasure working with Kev Duff and team on this show. Looking forward to mixing the Live shows in March 2016.

Good article outlining the BBC technical operation in the IBC at the Rio Olympics.

A pleasure working for these very clever gentlemen.
